My new Procreate Brushes!

I’ve been Nature Journaling for years with traditional gouache and colored pencil and decided to try to get the same effects on my iPad with Procreate. I soon found that the stock Procreate brushes couldn’t match my traditional media, so I created my own set of brushes! This well-rounded set of a dozen brushes allows me to paint just about anything  I can see out there in the natural world.

You can buy them here:   https://billsingleton.gumroad.com/l/rdVrx

Here are a few Nature Journal pages made with these brushes:

Monsoon Mushrooms!

I’ve gotten over 5 inches of rain in my garden over the last week and a half! That’s more rain than I got for all of last year combined. Now mushrooms are popping up all over the garden. Here are a few pages from my Garden Journal.

Nature Journaling with Procreate

I usually do my nature journaling with gouache, but lately I’ve been experimenting with doing digital pages on my iPad with the Procreate app. Here are a few examples.

Skillshare

Here is my header for Skillshare:
Most of the current classes are Traditional Gouache
and Acrylic Gouache, but I’ll be uploading classes on Forger app and Procreate soon!

3D mushrooms!

I’m learning a new 3D program called 3DCOAT.
This is my first sculpt and is a work in progress.
This is a recreation of a scene from my backyard. The mushrooms only lasted a day. The tallest one was about 3 inches tall.

Skillshare Classes!

I now have 9 classes on Skillshare!

Learn how to paint Animals, Plants and Fungi with Gouache and Acrylic paint!

I researched all the on-line learning sites and Skillshare is my favorite. Lynda and Udemy are also great but Skillshare has them beat in a couple of ways. The first is price. Skillshare is about half the price of Lynda. Udemy classes are paid for individually so you only get one at a time. Whereas in Skillshare you have access to the entire library of over 29,000 classes. Any this library is growing daily. There is about any topic you might be interested in: from Oil Painting and Animation to Computer Programming, creating web sites and setting up a small business. If you do subscribe, you’ll have access to all my classes (and lately I’ve been adding several a month) as well as the entire library of 29,000 classes and growing.

There are two types of memberships on Skillshare. The first one is a free membership, you don’t pay anything and get access to a whole lot of courses, limited of course, but still, it will get you well on your way. To become a free member you create an account and then you’re ready to browse through all classes and take all the ones categorized as free. You will also be able to view the intros/promos for the premium classes, but if you want to take the complete course you will have to upgrade to a premium membership.

Monsoon Mushrooms!

Monsoon 2019 has wrapped up in Tucson. We got almost 2 inches of rain in the last few weeks of September. That and the cooler temps led to an epic mushroom event in my garden. I counted over 50 mushrooms there in one day! Here are a few of my garden journal pages.

I made a tutorial video of this last mushroom page.

Monsoon Journal and new YouTube channel

The 2018 monsoon in Tucson has been pretty spectacular. Amazing cloudscapes almost every day. I started a Monsoon Journal to document some of the beauty around me. Here are a few pages. All done with  my new favorite paint, Acryla Gouache. I've done some YouTube videos on a few of these on my new YouTube channel:

Upper Bear Canyon

I went up to Upper Bear Canyon on Monday with my friend Jim. Here are two illustrations I did up there. Both using Acryla Gouache on toned paper.

Nature Journal 2017

In the summer of 2017 I started a nature journal. Although I've been painting for over 45 years, I'd never tried nature journaling until I came across the book " The Laws Guide to Nature Drawing and Journaling" by John Muir Laws. I'd been wanting to document my garden and the larger area around me for years, but could never decide on an approach or format. After reading this amazing book, I had a new way of seeing and thinking about the natural world around me.  I have been doing "plein air" sketching up on Tumamoc, the desert around me, and my own backyard for years, but not in a methodical way. I love this approach.

Here are a few pages from the backyard.
